Cocoon Workshops
Fiber artist Susan Allred invites you to take part in The Cocoon Index, a participatory art project that honors the unseen emotional labor so many people, especially women, carry. For each workshop, makers bring a small personal or household object—something that fits in the palm of the hand and holds meaning, memory, or emotional weight.
In the workshop, we’ll wrap our objects in laceweight yarn and embroider protective coverings around them, creating small cocoons that symbolize care, security, and transformation. These cocooned objects will become part of a larger body of fiber sculptures that Susan is assembling for her Outsourced exhibition in Phoenix in September 2026.
All voices and skill levels are welcome, and every contribution matters.
Two public workshops still have openings:
June 19th from 1–3:30 pm
Private home in north central Phoenix
July 18th from 10–12:30
Vision Gallery in Chandler
Email susan@cocoonindex.org for more information or to register for a workshop. Include your name, email address and the workshop you’re interested in attending.
Book a Private Workshop
If you’d like to bring The Cocoon Project to your group or organization, Susan is available for private workshops tailored to your community or workplace.
In a private session, participants gather to create cocoons from small personal objects or written notes, reflecting together on emotional labor, care, and the invisible work that holds our lives together. Susan brings the supplies, tools and expertise to guide the process, from wrapping and embroidering the cocoon to creating a meditative and meaningful experience for all skill levels.
To book a private workshop, use the contact form or email Susan directly at susan@cocoonindex.org.
