Outsourced

Outsourced is a solo exhibition by fiber artist Susan Allred that combines cocoon works from The Cocoon Index, a social engagement art project about emotional labor, alongside works made from Allred’s personal experience.

During workshops where participants brought objects tied to care, memory, or weight, the makers wrapped their objects in laceweight yarn, and embroidered them into cocoons. At the end of each workshop, makers wrote the story of their object for publication on this website.

At the exhibition, visitors can explore each artwork and then using the QR code near the social engagement pieces, they can read the maker narratives for each cocoon. Outsourced makes emotional labor visible through textile art, inviting reflection on what we carry, protect, and transform.

Presented by The Eye Lounge Collective at Modified Arts, the exhibition runs from September 18, 2026 — October 11, 2026. A second exhibition of selected works from Outsourced will be held at The Harry Wood Gallery at ASU in early 2027. Check back for those dates!
